The Sacred Mushroom - Break Away Girl (1967) [Original US Single]

The Sacred Mushroom - Break Away Girl
Original 1967 US Promo 45 RPM Single
Minaret MIN-131 (matrix number 711-183 / Discogs)
~ThePoodleBites rip in 96kHz / 24bit FLAC + high-resolution scans~

We've all seen (and probably heard) the Sacred Mushroom's sole 1969 album on Parallax, which is quite collectible by the chief vinyl enthusiasts, primarily due to the legendary cover artwork. Probably most have not heard this single, however, which was released by the band two years prior; and without the group name and lead guitarist's writing credits, you'd hardly see the connection. While their debut album was psychedelic blues (emphasis on the blues), this single is more psychedelic pop (emphasis on the pop). To be honest, it's not one of my favorites, but I figured it's worth cleaning up this double-A-side for a quick share here regardless. The stock copies have a B-side "Yellow Fellow," but this copy is this white-label promo version:

Track listing:
01) "Break Away Girl" -- 2:27

Vinyl Condition: VG+ (one side played much better than the other)

Lineage:
– Audio-Technica AT150MLx Dual Moving-Magnet Cartridge
– Audio-Technica AT-LP1240-USB Direct Drive Professional Turntable (internal stock preamp/ADC removed)
– TCC TC-754 RIAA Phono Preamp (new regulated power supply, added LM7812 regulator)
– Focusrite Scarlett 6i6 MkII (96kHz / 24bit)
– Adobe Audition CC 2018 (recording)
– iZotope RX 7 Audio Editor (manual declicking, additional adjustments)
– Audacity 2.2.2 (fades between tracks, split tracks)
– Foobar2000 v1.4.1 (tagging, dynamic range analysis)

Enjoy!

  2. Break Away Girl recalls for me a number of different songs; the intro is Play With Fire-esque, and with the "mother's little helper" lyric in the chorus, the Stones influence is pretty clear. The melody of those choruses really sounds like another song, which might be You And I Together but I'm not totally sure. -Justin
