Hunter S. Thompson & Oscar Zeta Acosta, Caesar's Palace, Las Vegas, NV (1971)

"This was the fatal flaw in Tim Leary's trip. He crashed around America selling 'consciousness expansion' without ever giving a thought to the grim meat-hook realities that were lying in wait for all the people who took him seriously. After West Point and the Priesthood, LSD must have seemed entirely logical to him . . . but there is not much satisfaction in knowing that he blew it very badly for himself, because he took too many others down with him.

"Not that they didn't deserve it: No doubt they all Got What Was Coming To Them. All those pathetically eager acid freaks who thought they could buy Peace and Understanding for three bucks a hit. But their loss and failure is ours, too. What Leary took down with him was the central illusion of a whole life-style that he helped create . . . a generation of permanent cripples, failed seekers, who never understood the essential old-mystic fallacy of the Acid Culture: the desperate assumption that somebody---or at least some force---is tending that Light at the end of the tunnel."

-Hunter S. Thompson (Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas, 1971, 2nd Ed., pp. 178-179)

  1. You're doing some fantastic work here.... have you considered a mono dedicated cartridge and stylus for future mono l rips?

    1. Hi, thank you for the kind words! I actually don't buy into the hype of a mono cartridge. From my understanding, these are sonically equivalent to a stereo cartridge that collapses the signal at the source. Not to mention that many mono records from the late '60s were actually cut with stereo cutting heads! It is much easier (and results with a much cleaner sound) to restore in stereo first, correct phase when necessary (a.k.a. stereo heads), and then collapse to mono. I also prefer the clarity of the AT150MLX to many "mono-only" setups that I have heard.

    2. Thanks for clearing that up ... in other words, you bring the right tools to the job.
I've returned to your site over and over to download everything that you've uploaded....each a total delight and in the case of Chico Hamilton's "Chic Chic Chico" ... well all I can say is "Wow" !
Omnibus is totally new to my ears and is worth the full download.... a real treasure.

Thanks again for all of your hard work... a joy to my ears.

  2. I also am excited about your blog and your work to preserve and present high fidelity psych recordings here. I'm interested in the implication in your current CJFish post that a sealed copy of an LP, provided that it's properly mastered and pressed in the first place, amounts to something akin to a well preserved master tape.
That's obviously more likely to be the case for something from a label like Vanguard than it might be for some other labels. I'm wondering, though, if you see a sort of parity there when conditions are right.

    1. That is probably something you will have to decide for yourself -- there is obviously an inherent subjectivity in the listening experience, and I recognize that others may not agree with my statements here. The vinyl format has faults that must be weighed against the pros and cons of modern digital reissues. In my experience this is quite release-specific, more so than label-specific. In many cases, a modern digital reissue is a far more accurate assessment of the artist's intentions than a vinyl transfer ever could be. My goal here is present recordings where that is not the case. Thanks for the comment!

  3. Hello,

First, thanks for all your rips! Second, I would like to send you some "Equals" mono lp's in September (when I go back home). Would you be willing to rip them? There are three in total.

    Thank you!

  11. I enjoy your blog greatly, even though I'm nothing in the way of an audiophile. It's a good thing you're doing this work!

I wanted to talk about Hunter S. Thompson, who(m - grammar) you quote up there. It's a bit rich of the man to have a swipe at Leary (an easy target) for his dumb life choices - as he sees them - when Thompson himself was hardly a role model for anything, especially not drug use.

I took acid many times in the late 'sixties, early 'seventies, and a couple of times since. It's been one of the truly good and positive experiences in my life. Your mileage may differ, of course. But Thompson, in addition to being a great writer, was also as big an idiot as Leary and a bigger asshole.

    1. Oh, Hunter... he had quite the personality, didn't he? It's hard to imagine anyone else that would've been capable or crazy enough to do his early journalism (e.g. following Nixon and the Hell's Angels), or authentic and gonzo enough to critique the very culture in which he was inseparably involved.

    1. Yes, sorry for the 'hiatus' ... there is LOTS coming, some things hopefully very soon -- but being a perfectionist, it's gotta be perfect before I unleash anything here :)

  13. Came here searching for Country Joe & The Fish, but, can see a fair bit of other stuff that I'd like. One problem, though...that Mega site simply won't work for me.

I've tried everything! I can get past the daily limit thing easy enough (I don't mind waiting for the clock to count down). Same thing happens every time - it goes go far, then drops out giving me a message saying "out of memory". Every other download site works fine, but, Mega just won't work for me at all.

  15. Hey, man. Amazing blog. This stuff really has made me appreciate psychedelic rock and obscure music. I love listening to all of it! However, I notice that a certain blog post has gone missing. Whatever happened to your post and recordings of Omnibus? Its all gone!

I found that post to be really interesting with the band member's recollections and your digitization of obscure versions of songs. Why did you remove the post?

    Thanks!

  16. Dear TPB, cannot stop listening to your impressive 13th Floor Elevators' rips and was wondering if you ever did a rip of Golden Dawn's Power Plant LP... jusgt wondering how great it could sound with your treatment. Many thanks for your amazing job !!!!

  17. Hello Mr Poodle... Your work is amazing and very much appreciated !!! I ended up here through a myriad of blogs and this one has been absolutely saved to my favourites. Your Bubble Puppy upload is amazing, on headphones it's like pouring chocolate sauce in my ears. Greetings from down under.
